Charles Grignion, History Engraver (1721-1810)
In early 2022, I published a second study of a family of London-based artisans of French Huguenot origin: Charles Girgnion, History Engraver (1721-1810).
Charles Grignion enjoyed a 60-year career, during which he contributed significantly to the development of English book illustration, and maintained professional relations with many of the leading figures in contemporary culture, such as Gravelot, Francis Hayman, Hogarth, Horace Walpole, and the major London print- and booksellers.
This monograph also contains material concerning Charles's father, Daniel, brother, Thomas, and nephew, Thomas, all of whom were leading watchmakers in London. The elder Thomas was Voltaire's agent in London.
Charles's nephew, also called Charles, was a painter and Royal Academician.
It is available to download or read in eBook format on the right-hand side of this page.
